App Revenue and Statistics: first 7 months


Here is a summary of my first 7 months as an Android app developer.  So far I have used two ad platforms in my apps.  Up until the middle of October I was splitting the requests about 50% each between the two networks.  At that time Admob numbers took a sudden nose dive.  I decided to shift all ads to Millennial Media.  Millennial Media had always performed a little better and got more clicks and more revenue for the same number of requests. I haven't shifted back to Admob to see if the problem has corrected itself.  It could have been the ads that were getting served just weren't interesting to my target audience. I may try a couple of new ad networks over the next couple of months to see if any of them do better.

The active installs for Beale Street Music Fest dropped off alot after the festival was over and has been slowly dropping since.  I expect more interest around late February early March of next year when the 2012 lineup in announced.  I should get more ad impressions from it next year since the app will be available from March through the festival in early May.  Last year it was only released the week before the festival.

The installs for 30 Day Love Spark have been steadily climbing but leveled off lately. The ratio for active installs versus total installs is a little alarming. There hasn't been much feedback (only 5 ratings), but the feedback I have gotten has been mostly positive. It would be interesting to know why 2/3 of the people have uninstalled it. I think in a future update I will include a place in settings to encourage feedback in the market. I also think adding a sharing feature so users can share the app with friends on facebook or twitter would be useful and may drive more downloads.

So what is the major take away from the first 7 months? I need to explore other ways to bring in revenue. Ad revenue alone is not cutting it. It would also be helpful to find ways to market these apps better to get more installs.

I'm setting my first goal to make $100 in a month. Its not alot, but it is a 2000% increase over current earnings. Hopefully I can get there in the next few months.
